Simple Ways to Add More Movement Throughout Your Day

When it comes to modern life, everything seems to be a lot easier these days. There are so many machines and appliances that are making our lives so much more easier that, although it may feel convenient, there is a downside to our physical activity. Technology tends to make things easier so that we don’t have to do as much with our day, but with that there’s been a general increase in weight gain amongst many people and therefore, an increase in the risk of developing chronic diseases.

Regular activity and exercise is an important aspect of daily life to ensure that you remain healthy and stay at a recommended weight. It may seem simple but many people find it hard to get enough physical activity each day. Many people are sitting in front of computers and at desks each day. This constant sitting is creating negative health outcomes for many people.

Even just small amounts of movement can help you to stay active and healthier. We have some simple and easy ways you can incorporate more physical activity into your day to ensure you give your body what it needs to stay healthy.

Think about your daily commute to work

Are you driving to work every day? Or, are you sitting on a bus every day? Think about the way that you commute to work and where you can potentially add some more physical activity into this part of your daily routine. If catching a train every day is your only option, perhaps you could plan to get off a stop earlier and walk the rest of the way to your workplace. Riding a bike to work is also a very popular option and can help you burn even more calories than sitting in a car. If you don’t want to go all out and buy a bike for your daily commute, walking to work is your best option.

Get physical when running errands

Are you sending an email to your colleague who sits two desks away? Are you getting your lunch delivered to your desk from the ground floor? There are a number of different errands that you are likely running each day throughout your workday that could be done yourself to help increase your daily physical activity. Instead of sending that email to your colleague, why not stand up and go for a walk to their desk and talk to them directly? Not only can you get some more steps into your day, but you can also help improve your relationships with your colleagues in the workplace. If you get your lunch each day from a cafe nearby you could walk there yourself or perhaps try a cafe that is slightly further away so that you can get some more steps in.

Take the stairs

If you are working in a building with elevators, this is a good opportunity to start using the stairs to get some more activity into your day at work. In some buildings, the stairs are only for emergencies and/or used as fire exits. But, you may be able to approach your building manager or supervisor to see if it’s possible to have access to the stairs throughout the day. You may be out of breath in your first few times going up and down the stairs, but your body will thank you for it in the end.

Park further away

Whether it’s parking in the parking lot to go to work or you’re simply going shopping, parking further away means that you’ll be getting more steps into your day to and from your destination.Yes, it might be easier to park closer to the building that you’re going to, but just a few extra steps can be hugely beneficial to your health. As well as getting some extra steps into your day, you may even find that your car is less prone to bumps and scratches because there are less cars parked near yours.

Turn your household tools into a daily exercise routine

Not everyone likes doing household chores, that is a fact. But, doing extra tasks around the home will not only give you more physical activity into your day but you’ll also have a wonderful home that is clean and tidy at all times. Folding the laundry or doing some ironing are all extra ways that you can get more active throughout your day and help around the house at the same time. If you have a partner who is constantly on your back about doing the household chores, they will be pleased to see that you’ve been putting in a little bit more around the house, too!

Getting some more exercise into your day doesn’t have to be a headache. With a few little tweaks to your daily routine, you’ll be able to get a few more steps into your day and help improve your activity levels.
